LOS ANGELES, July 15 (Our Los Angeles) — Los Angeles’ march toward the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games hit a new milestone Tuesday: LA28 opened Games-time volunteer applications and began recruiting the crew it says will help run the event.

LA28 says it is seeking up to 60,000 volunteers for the Volunteer Crew, a workforce that will support everything from guest services and transportation to ceremonies, sport operations and technology. The organizing committee said the portal is live now, and that people who previously expressed interest will receive an email with next steps. But LA28 said anyone can apply, whether or not they registered before.

Why volunteers matter

LA28 framed the effort as a major part of how the Games will function on the ground. In its July 14 announcement, the organization said, “Every great production needs a crew.”

Volunteer jobs are divided into eight categories: communications, driving, experience, medical, ceremonies, operations, sport and technology. Some roles will require specialized skills, including medicine and language translation, LA28 said.

The organization said most volunteer opportunities will be in the Los Angeles area, but assignments will also extend beyond the city. LA28 said the volunteer program will include roles in Oklahoma City and at soccer venues in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.

What the volunteer timeline looks like

LA28 said Olympic volunteer service will run in 2028 during the Games period, with the Olympic Games scheduled for July 14-30, 2028. The Paralympic Games are scheduled for August 15-27, 2028.

The organizing committee said there will be an announcement at least seven days before the application closes. It did not give a deadline in Tuesday’s release.

LA28 also said the application portal was built with Deloitte.

How this fits into the bigger picture

The volunteer rollout comes as Los Angeles enters the final two-year stretch before the Games. LA28 says the city will become only the third to host three Olympic Games, following 1932 and 1984, and that 2028 will bring Los Angeles its first Paralympic Games.

LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover told Reuters that recent World Cup success showed “the power of sport to unite people” and said volunteers will be “a key part of that experience.”

The organizing committee also points to community volunteering, which is separate from Games-time service. On its volunteer page, LA28 says those efforts are tied to local organizations across Los Angeles and focus on sustainability, restoration and the wellbeing of venue cities.

For Los Angeles, the volunteer launch is one of the clearest signs yet that the city’s Olympics are moving from planning to staffing. The message from LA28 is simple: the Games will need a large local work force, and applications are now open for people who want to be part of it.
